From the realization that the development of the country is not possible without skilled manpower and in accordance with the real needs of the labor market at home and abroad, the government has taken various effective steps for the overall development of the country's technical education and is continuously taking them. As part of this, a project titled "Skills and Training Enhancement Project (STEP)" is being implemented with the support of the Directorate of Technical Education under the control of the Technical and Madrasa Education Department under the Ministry of Education. The project has been extended for the next three (3) years (July 2016 - June 2019) on successful completion of the initial six-year (July 2010 - June 2016) project. Bangladesh government, World Bank and Canada are jointly financing this successful project. A total of Tk 1782 crore has been allocated by the Development Cooperatives to continue the development of technical education. Out of that, after the initial estimated expenditure of Tk 849 crore, development cooperative organizations have allocated Tk 933 crore more as the implementation progress of the project is satisfactory.
The main objective of the STEP project is to make technical education accessible to socio-economically backward students by improving and expanding the quality of technical education and training and to eradicate poverty and unemployment by creating and increasing their employment opportunities.
